How to Clean your Oven

1/11/2019

Cleaning your oven is very much like going to the supermarket to get groceries when you would rather be in the comfort of your home, preferably on a couch and watching a movie. Nobody ever wants to clean the oven as it can be such a time consuming and stressful job but like it or not, it is important to clean the oven regularly as it can affect the quality of food you make with it. It always doesn’t have to be so stressful though? You can make things easy for yourself and your pocket (as most of the materials to be used would most likely be in your kitchen already) by trying out any of these oven cleaning methods.

Method One

This first method takes quite a bit of time so you might want to clear your day before proceeding to do this. It can be used for very dirty ovens.

Materials needed

Baking soda, Water, Rubber gloves, Damp dishcloth, Plastic or silicone spatula, Spray bottle, White vinegar

Steps to follow

  1. You need to empty the oven first, remove all the oven racks, trays, thermometers etc. you can also lay some clothes on the floor so that your floor would not get stained.
  2. Make the baking soda paste. This is done by mixing portions of baking soda with a few tablespoons of water till a paste of spreadable consistency is gotten.
  3. This paste is then spread all over the oven with gloved hands preferably. The paste has to be spread to every corner of the oven except for the heating elements of course.
  4. Leave the paste overnight or for up to 12 hours at least.
  5. Use the time in-between to clean the oven racks with baking soda and vinegar.
  6. After the stipulated 12 hours, take a damp cloth rag and wipe out the now dried baking soda paste
  7. After 10 - 12 hours, put on your gloves again and taking a damp cloth rag, open the oven and wipe down all surfaces. If there are sticky spots, you can use wet scouring pumice, or either a plastic or silicone spatula to help scrape off the paste.
  8. Spray the vinegar in the direction of the areas that still have the baking soda paste, it would foam and be easier to wipe off this way.
  9. Wipe with the damp cloth for the last time to remove all residues.
  10. Replace your oven racks and voila, your oven is clean and shiny now!

Method 2
This is relatively faster than the first method and should only be used if the oven is mildly dirty as it does little or nothing for ovens that very dirty. This is the basic oven cleaning you can do on a regular basis, instead of paying for deep cleaning services.

Materials Needed
Lemons and a medium-sized, oven-proof mixing bowl.

Steps to follow
  1. You first have to fill the mixing bowl with water, cut two of the lemons in half and place them in the bowl.
  2. Then you heat your oven to 250 degrees. Place the mixing bowl in one of the oven racks, turn the oven off after an hour and wait for it to get relatively warm.
  3. Use a damp cloth to wipe down all surfaces thoroughly. Your oven is clean and ready to be used!
